Hunting For A Place in Munich
The hurdle started a couple of days ago. My strategy is to consult all websites that have to do with properties. The best one was Immoscout24. I downloaded the application. I prepared my Selbstauskunft, attached a copy of the payslip and a SCHUFA.
It is a marathon. When you are serious about it, you ought to send applications every fucking day and then expect a reply. I sent at least 6 new applications daily and some more reminders to the previous one who did not respond to me. I checked my emails frequently to the point I forgot how many times it was: in public transportation, during lunch, at work (I asked for a permission from my manager to consult my private phone all day long, and she was completely OK with it), at home, in the toilet, etc.
Whenever I get an invitation to an apartment visit, I plan it, tell my boss about it and go to it. Sometimes it happens during work. Thank Allah that my boss was understanding of my situation.
I went on this routine for about 3 months in a row. No rest. On the weekends I travel back to my small rented studio in Regensburg.
I once traveled from Regensburg to Munich and back on one Saturday, just to visit an apartment. It was about 4 hours total travel time. 4 hours for a single visit.
I did not want to make excuses, even if it costs so much time. It was my choice to move to Munich and I must man up. I must find something.
At first I was very happy with each positive reply I receive. I even was happier whenever I hook up a personal meeting with the estate agents. But then I realized, the meetings with the estate agents were just a step. In fact, it is a normal procedure which I guess is meant for two things:
- to collect the documents from the candidates quickly, instead of Email,
- to visually evaluate the candidates, make a preliminary selection, and forward a “VIP” list to the property owner, who will decide on which prey he will feed his hunger for money..
Why did I say candidates and not candidate? Because I discovered to my disbelief that dozens if not hundreds of people are like me in Munich, looking for an apartment. Once I came to visit a 3-room apartment in Sendling for 980€ kalt, and I saw a long line of people waiting in front of the building. I took my place in the line, only to discover that the line continues across the stairs up to the second floor!!
More and more I lost the desire to go to apartment visits. On a couple of occasions I went to an apartment visit completely exhausted. I did not even want to inspect the rooms. I only wanted to tell the estate agent that I am here and that I need an apartment. Fuck, I am not the only one who wants to convey this message!
